The
purpose of Kinderlink is to provide
a link between preschool and
kindergarten. It is essential to
understand that young children
cannot be rushed through
developmental stages. They need
time to build a solid foundation at
each stage of growth upon which to
construct the next stage.
In order
for any link to become effective, it
must touch both sides of the area it
spans. Note below and outline
describing the task of educators
working with children attending
Kinderlink.
Perceptual motor involves
all senses. A child’s
perceptual-motor development is
crucial to their readiness for
learning to read. It remains the
major way of linking knowledge and
understanding of what children
learn. The equipment that we will
use has been designed to challenge
the children’s sensory perceptions
to form a more complete
understanding about concepts and
experiences. Our program strongly
follows Jack Capon’s Basic &
Perceptual-Motor lesson plans.
Language will be offered in
a variety of ways to spark curiosity
to help make learning fun. The
importance of language cannot be
over-emphasized. The ability to
communicate is an essential skill.
Language is an integral part of
every subject area. Children learn
conceptual language best when they
are active participants and
manipulate real objects and
materials. It is important for
children to be exposed to a variety
of literature. Our curriculum is
published by Scholastic with a
strong phonics emphasis.
Science, geography and math
teaches children to observe, to
question, and to draw conclusions.
Children at this age rarely use
logic, but draw conclusions based on
appearances; i.e. they may not be
able to understand that the volume
of water does not change by pouring
it into another container that
appears to hold more. The study of
maps and visual representations of
our world will help the children see
how each piece or place fits
together in God’s great creation.
Therefore, science, geography and
math skills will be learned through
stimulating experiences and the use
of many manipulatives.
